World's first iPhone 3Gs music video?

My good friends over at M ss ng P eces sent me a link to this music video shot entirely with the iPhone 3Gs. Directed by Ari Kuschnir for musician Reyna Perez. It looks amazing. I’m really digging the auto-shutter-y goodness here; a nice graphic treatment that really highlights the unique qualities of the technology. Well done, gents.

Here’s a bit of the story:

Reyna Perez has embraced the concept of digital collaboration with her self-titled EP.  She recorded each song in Brooklyn on acoustic guitar at a home studio and emailed the tracks to producer Michael Maurice (Curio Sound) in Denver.  Over the course of  2 months, Maurice mastered her songs into full fledged productions using Logic software and his own instruments. "I've given them a warm analogue sound, without using any actual analogue equipment; it's a testament to the times, and I'm very happy with the results," says Maruice.

The final mixes arrived via ftp on Friday, June 17th, the same day the iphone 3GS hit the streets.  Video producer Ari Kuschnir, Reyna's fiancee, purchased the iPhone after a two hour wait, made shorter by listening to the tracks.  Hearing the new music and playing with 3GS, he had an idea.  Why not debut Reyna with the first iPhone music video?  "It became clear that the phone's camera quality was good enough to shoot a music video.  It seemed fitting for the project."

Over the next few days, the plan and the team came together. Within a week, through a series of collaborations much like the mastering of Reyna's EP, the video was complete.

Cold War Kids interactive video

Cold_War_Kids_interactive_vide.zip (669 KB)

I’m digging this interactive video for Cold War Kids that is currently on mtv.com. The experience is simple: four band members playing four different versions of the song I’ve seen enough. Click the colors to swap out the songs, click the members themselves to mute / unmute their tracks. Clicking on ‘fan favorites’ quickly reveals two distinct versions of the song, as created (unknowingly) by the viewers. There’s even a (very) simple facebook app that lets you stream the four different versions on your app page.

I love it when bands aren’t so precious with their product; allowing people to participate in the experience of creating music is a great way to connect more deeply with an audience. Radiohead and Arcade Fire have done this with tremendous result, and its nice to see younger bands following in their technological footsteps.

Awesome lo-fi crowd-sourced Bloc Party video - via PSFK

Bloc Party has gone the way of crowd-sourcing for their latest video. Made up of mostly fan-submitted mobile phone footage, the video for the group’s song Ares (Villains Remix) has a great raw feel, pulling together a colorful cross-section of different perspectives.

PSFK has this great bloc party video, which was crowd-sourced from cell phone camera footage, and what appears to be flip cam footage from the band themselves.

The editing really shines here, and the video isn't afraid to be low-fi. Fun with cheap fx and lots of strobe-style cutting to be found here. Great stuff.
