I've seen some cool AR executions for Lego and Topps that allow users to experience augmented reality directly with their product, but inexplicably, most AR projects still rely on the clunky experience of requiring users to print out a marker of some kind. Personally I haven't had a printer set up in my home for over a year, and I hate the idea of wasting a piece of paper and ink just to participate in a marketing experiment.
Which is why I love this Burger King banner that uses a dollar bill as the marker. Everyone's got them, and you don't even have to click through to a website to experience it. Simple, straightforward and a direct tie-in to their product.
I know I've been posting a lot of CP+B work lately, and it's not just because I used to work there, it's because they're killing it making simple + functional online experiences that get talked about. Take notes people, I know I am.
Of course, there is also this BK take on AR: Augmented reality Whopper might the best AR execution yet

Go ahead, drop the needle and experience the dopeness at www.craveonline.com
This is the kind of magic that gets me excited: when media, creative and technology work in sync to produce something that makes a web experience better (or more interesting, at the very least). Who says banner ads can't be a creative opportunity? Props to the CP+B crew for bringing this to life.
